Hungarian Cabbage Casserole for the Budget Minded

Feeding a family a healthy, delicious meal that doesn’t include pasta is always a challenge. Don’t get me wrong. I love pasta, but I also know that too many starchy carbs are a contributing factor to our country’s problem of obesity. This inexpensive main-dish is a complete and nutritious meal best served with a tossed salad and a slice of rustic bread and butter. In order to stretch the meal a little bit farther, it could be served over a helping of brown rice.


1 medium cabbage head quartered, cored and roughly chopped
1 medium onion chopped
1 lb. ground turkey or chicken or 85% lean beef
1  24-ounce can Hunt’s Garlic and Herb Pasta Sauce
3 tbsp. paprika
1 tbsp. olive oil


Preheat over to 350 degrees.
In a large dutch oven pour in olive oil. Add chopped onion and cook until onion is translucent (about 5 minutes).
Add ground meat and cook breaking up any chunks until no longer pink.
Add pasta sauce and paprika stirring well.
Add cabbage and fold into the meat sauce until well coated and evenly distributed throughout cabbage. Cover and bake in oven for approximately 1 hour.
Remove from oven and serve immediately.
