This blog was long overdue for an update. With more time than money on my hands, I’m ready to begin anew with my favorite subject — saving money. Because it always seems like I have more time than money, saving it has become an obsession with me over the years. I’ve managed to get deeply into debt numerous times, and just as many times dug my way out with a hundred and one different ways to save money.

Going To The Dogs (and Cats)

Let’s face it. Pets can be expensive, especially if you have to pay to groom them every six weeks or so. Everything — including food, vet care, toys, etc. — is going up almost on a daily basis. But with a little bit more time and maybe the use of a few more brain cells, you could be saving hundreds of dollars a year on pet expenses.

Check out discount stores for pet toys. While you’re going to Ross Dress For Less to, well, dress for less, check out their pet section for an array of items. Same goes for dollar stores.

Put your animals on a diet. Let’s face it. Most pets are overweight. By reducing the portions you feed your pets, you will save money on food bills and on vet bills down the line. But don’t skimp on the quality of the food. If your pet is going to eat less, it needs all the nutrients (not fillers) it can get.

Do it yourself. Grooming that is. It’s not that difficult to bathe, blow dry and brush your pets coat. You might even find that you can wield an electric hair trimmer with the best of them.

Save on vet bills. Ask your vet about discounts. Many offer discounts on dental work, senior pets and on multiple pets if you being them in together. If your pet needs a prescription that is also taken by humans, opt for the generic brand and get deep discounts at pharmacies such as Wal-Mart, Target, Costco and Walgreens.

Shop at unexpected places. How about baby gates at a store that caters to babies which are cheaper than animal gates at a pet store, supplements in the natural food section of the grocery store, and farm and feed stores especially for those with large dogs.

This has nothing at all to do with saving money. If you haven’t seen Pillow Pets yet, they are not to be missed. They are so darn cute. I first ran into them at a baby shower. It was the hit of the shower and everyone went home and ordered one, including myself. They make a really cute, inexpensive gift for child or adult. Everybody loves these furry little critters. Buy one as a gift, but don’t forget to get one for yourself.

If you’ve never had to take prescription drugs on a regular basis, it’s difficult to appreciate the bite it can take out of ones budget. But it doesn’t have to do serious damage if you happen to be taking a drug with a generic brand available.

Both Target and Walmart offer generic brand prescriptions for just $4 for 30 pills which works out to $0.13 per pill. If you don’t have a Target or a Walmart within your shopping area, you can order online. Of course you have to pay which may negate your savings, but it’s worth making a comparison at Target Pharmacy and Walmart Pharmacy. You’ll also need to weigh the shipping charges against the cost of gas to and from your closest Walmart or Target (and the temptation you might have to buy other things you don’t really need).

Today, I stumbled upon a fun way to brush up on your language skills—and end world hunger at the same time. It’s called FreeRice.com. You answer simple vocabulary questions in the language of your choice (English, French, Spanish, Italian, or German) and for each right answer, the World Food Program donates ten grains of rice to help end world hunger. You can also answer questions on art, geography, math, chemistry and English grammar.

FreeRice has donated over 80 billion grains of rice since they began their effort in 2007. Rice has been distributed in Uganda, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Nepal, Bhutan, and Myanmar to name a few. The donated rice has fed refugees, pregnant women, school children, and those affected by natural disasters.

It’s that time of year again. In only a few weeks the kids will be heading off to school. This time of the year can be a real budget buster, especially when Christmas seems not-so-far away.
