1.    Coupon your way to a lighter shopping cart
You could save $s on all kinds of essential monthly outgoings by using coupons. There are entire websites dedicated to the best money-off coupons, which could save you money on everything from eating out to getting your next eye test or buying that new coat at the mall.

Many newspapers and magazines also offer coupons and other kinds of discounts and offers – so keep an eye out, and have some scissors at the ready!

2.    Buy in bulk
From kitchen towels to juice, shampoo to soap, buying your household essentials in bulk could save you a fair bit – and make it less likely you’ll unexpectedly run out of the things you need.

Filling your freezer a month in advance (or more) could also be a great bulk-buying idea, and could help you resist the temptation of impulse-buying.

3.    Repay your debts
If it’s financially realistic for you, paying down your debts sooner rather than later could save you a lot in interest overall. So if you have a high-interest credit card you’re repaying, it could make real sense to pay it off at the earliest possible opportunity.

If you’re struggling with your debts, you should look into getting some debt help ASAP.

4.    Recycle!
It’s easy to get into the habit of buying things brand new, but why not make use of the items you already have? Kids’ clothes and toys can be passed down to your younger kids, and rather than buying a new coffee table or chair, why not use some old paint to give one you’ve already got a new lease of life?

This is an idea that extends well beyond the walls of your household – if you know other parents with older and younger kids, you might be amazed when you realize how much you (and they) could save by swapping clothes and toys.

5.    Cut back on fuel costs
If you travel to work by car, see if a few colleagues would be willing to car share. At weekends, rather than driving everywhere, why not walk or take the subway? You may be surprised at just how much of a difference it could make to your pocket.

Carpeting and Flooring –  Most people wanted to spruce up their homes before the holidays, so stores are hurting for business in January.

Furniture — The main furniture shows are in January and July which means that stores have to clear out the old stuff before the new models arrive in February and March.

Digital Cameras — The Consumer Electronics Show in January means that cameras and a lot of electronic gadgetry needs to be moved off the shelf to make way for the new stuff from the show.

Linens and Bedding — Stores have been having “white sales” since 1878 when this marketing ploy was invented. It worked then and still works today. Look for discounts from 10% – 60%.

Winter Clothing — Already you’re seeing the spring lines appear in stores and the winter goods packed to the gills on sales racks. It’s still plenty cold outside, so you won’t have to save your bargains until next winter to wear.

Bicycles — New models come out in February and March, so stores are trying to clear out the old ones.

Let’s use water as an example. Much of our country is suffering from drought whether it looks that way or not. Some areas of the country could actually run out of water in the next 100 years. So what can we do to preserve this precious resource? As it turns out, a few little things can mean big savings.

• Don’t wait for the water to get hot when drawing a bath. Close the drain immediately and adjust the temperature as the tub fills up. Saves hundreds of gallons of water a month.
• Use the sprayer on your kitchen faucet for tasks such as washing dishes and rinsing fruits and vegetables. The sprayer uses 32% less water.
• Harvest gray water to reuse for watering plants or cleaning tools and the like. For example: water left over in glasses after a meal, water from rinsing fruits and vegetables, water waiting for the shower to warm up, water from your dehumidifier. It is estimated that the average household can recycle as much as 26 gallons per day of gray water.  Keep a bucket handy for this purpose.
• Fixing a running toilet can save up to 20 gallons a day. Replacing a toilet with a WaterSense certified toilet can save 4,000 gallons per year.

These are all little things that if done by everybody could save millions and millions of gallons of water each year.

Major Appliances — Refrigerators, washers, dryers, stoves, etc. New models are coming out and dealers have to get rid of last year’s models.  Take advantage of end of year clearance sales on appliances and save big. BTW, you probably won’t be able to tell last year’s model from the new ones.

Automobiles — Just like appliances, dealers are making way for the new models. Although auto sales have picked up  since the heart of the recession, there are still more cars than buyers.  So don’t be afraid to make low-ball offers. Who knows? Someone might be desperate. Also, best time to shop is a weekday morning at the end of September.

Laptop Computers — Ooh, just in time for school even if you’re not going back to school. Studies have shown that the best time to purchase laptop computers is early fall and April.
